Physical Therapy on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood
Holsman's Maplewood clinic is at 1985 Springfield Ave., on one of the township's main corridors. NJ Transit's 25 and 70 buses run along Springfield Avenue, and the clinic is close to home for patients from South Orange, Millburn, Irvington, Union and Springfield. Our South Orange clinic on Valley Street shares the same clinical leadership.
Clinic supervisor Dr. Mandakini Desai, PT, DPT, NCS, is a board-certified neurologic clinical specialist, which is especially helpful for patients recovering from a stroke, living with Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis, or working on balance and walking. Occupational therapist Joann Marquez, OT, CHT, is also a Certified Hand Therapist, and speech-language pathologist Priyadarsini Kumarasamy rounds out the team.
Beyond neurologic rehab, the Maplewood team treats back and neck pain, sports and work injuries, arthritis and recovery after surgery. The clinic offers physical, occupational and speech therapy, Holsman's HolStep® and No Fall Protocol® balance programs, shockwave therapy, KinesIQ balance training and functional capacity evaluations. Holsman has been treating Essex County patients since 2004.

Questions About Our Maplewood Clinic
What insurance does the Maplewood clinic accept?
We work with Medicare Part B and most PPO plans, and we treat many patients through workers' compensation (state claims and federal FECA), motor vehicle accident (no-fault/PIP) coverage and the VA Community Care Network. Our Maplewood front desk checks your coverage at no charge, so call 862-278-7800 before you come in.
Do I need a referral for physical therapy in Maplewood?
Not in most cases. New Jersey's direct access law lets you start physical therapy without a prescription, but some insurance plans still require a referral or prescription to pay for it, so we check your plan before your first visit. With Medicare you can start without a referral, but your physician must certify your plan of care, and we coordinate that with your doctor.
Do you treat stroke and Parkinson's patients in Maplewood?
Yes. Our Maplewood clinic supervisor, Dr. Mandakini Desai, is a board-certified neurologic clinical specialist (NCS), and the team works on walking, balance, strength and daily tasks for patients with stroke, Parkinson's disease, MS and other neurologic conditions.
What happens at my first visit?
Your therapist will review your history and goals and test strength, movement, balance and function. You will get a clear explanation and a plan, and most patients begin treatment the first day. Bring ID, your insurance card and any referral or prescription.
What are the Maplewood clinic's hours?
Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
Can I take the bus to the Maplewood clinic?
Yes. NJ Transit's 25 and 70 buses run along Springfield Avenue in Maplewood. If you are driving, call 862-278-7800 and we will tell you where to park.
